Did you know HACK&Co's search engine does key words? Realtors often use lingo like "handyman special" which will allow you to curate a list of properties tailored to what you're looking for.

Below is a collection of handyman specials that might be your future dream home. Here's three things to consider when looking for this type of property:

  1. The reason they mention location three times in real estate is because what you're buying is a place. You're not going to move it, so make sure to buy the best location possible.
  2. Ask your agent about transaction history. The properties that exchange hands more often generally get more renovations, as everyone puts their personal stamp on it. Renovating over other peoples work is not advised. Instead, look for properties that are almost original inside for the cleanest canvas to apply your improvements.
  3. Look for homes with current mechanical systems. You don't want half of your kitchen budget swallowed by having to do new windows. Consider passing on properties that need roofs, furnaces, or structural repairs.
